UPDATE MAY 17

Bentley is finally crate free and loving every moment of his new found freedom. He is very quiet and loving. When he does bark, it's a baritone bark. He loves to watch the squirrels in the trees or snuggle in your lap for a nap. He doesn't like to be alone, so he will follow you around and be a quiet companion.

He does really well with most dogs. He hasn't had much exposure to other animals, so cats and some larger dogs will cause him to chase. He has been around small children too, but he panics when they run towards him. He doesn't bite, just runs away so he must stay on a leash when not in an enclosed yard. He doesn't bark at house guests. He is very inquisitive and ready for some ear-scratches wherever he can get them.

He is almost 100% house-trained, but can't manuever the doggy door, so frequent rest stops are important. He is crate-trained and stays crated when home alone. He is working on the leash, however, he is still getting his strength back and gets tired very quickly. Walks are extremely short. He prefers a pet stroller to a walk on the leash, but is fine to run free in an enclosed backyard. His gait is staggered in the back and probably always will be, but it just adds to his personality. That stagger (or we call it "the swagger") reminds you of what he has endured and conquered!

UPDATE JANUARY 25

Bentley's Foster parents gave us a great update: He is doing very well with crate rest. He doesn't mind being in the crate, as long as he isn't alone in the room. He has been going for bathroom breaks outside and seems to have control of both bladder and bowel.

Yesterday, we walked up to his crate to take him out for his potty break. He saw us coming and knew he was going to get to go out and actually stood up on his own. Only for a few seconds, but you can tell he is feeling stronger already. He favors his right leg, which seems to not have as much movement. On top of that, he tried to wag his tail a bit. It wasn't a big wag, since his tail is broken, but it was a slight movement.

He likes to have his ears scratched, so we take the time to do that as many times as possible. He has his first post-op visit Friday.

Update January 19

Bently is showing signs of deep pain sensation and superficial pain which are really good signs. He even took a few steps on his own. CTDR is going to send the file to a surgeon to see whether or not all Bentley's fractures would benefit from surgery. We'll update once we have more news. Thank all of you for the healing rays, they seem to be helping. Bentley has a long road ahead of him, but he continues to be loving and show a mighty will to live and get better.

CTDR took in a little boy named Bentley this past weekend. Bentley was found motionless in the middle of the road and some Good Samaritans stopped and checked on him. They took him to their vet and got him pain medications and then CTDR was contacted. He was transferred to Austin and then checked out by the CTDR vet -- it was determined he was probably hit by a car as he has a fractured pelvis, broken tail, and compressed, fractured vertebrae in his back.

Even through all his pain, Bentley is loving and gentle with those helping him. He snuggles his little head into you like a hug. So please send healing rays to tiny Bentley. If you'd like to help CTDR defray some of his medical costs, please go to Bentley's ChipIn -- every single dollar adds up.
